One of the best places in Vermont that holds a rich and varied history is none other than Sweetwaters on Church Street in Burlington. The building was constructed in 1880s and was home to the Burlington Trust Company. In the 1950s it was occupied by one of Burlington’s most respected men’s clothiers, Miles & Reilly. It then housed the famous Kennedy Brothers’ Woodenware Company. In 1981, the building was restored and renovated by a local restaurateur and became the Sweetwaters we all know and love. Sweetwaters is located at 120 Church Street in Burlington.
You can find signs of the former bank both inside and out.
The old bank vaults were been converted into walk-in coolers and the original door can be found between the ladies’ and men’s rooms. It's still gilded with the Burlington Trust Company’s name!
You'll find the original iron bank security grates above the entrance to the atrium.
Security grates have been left on all original exterior windows on the building.
The atrium was formerly an alley and has since been enclosed.
The interior wall is covered with a two-story mural by a local artist and portrays life on Church Street in the early 1980’s. If you look hard enough, you might spot some familiar faces of local dignitaries and residents of the Burlington areas at the time.
