Why settle for a national chain restaurant when Utah has so many delicious local burger joints? Here are some of the best...
1) American Burger, Tooele and Grantsville
Tooele county folks enjoy the charbroiled goodness of American Burger in both Tooele and Grantsville. Try the American burger, which includes pastrami, or the classic cheeseburger. The shakes are thick and come in your choice of 32 flavors or mix-ins.
2) Burger Bar, Roy
A classic walk-up burger joint, Burger Bar opened in 1956, serving burgers for a quarter apiece. The burgers are a bit more expensive now, but the menu has expanded considerably. Each month, Burger Bar features the "Exotic Meat of the Month:" llama, camel, yak, kangaroo and more.
3) Chubby’s Cafe, Pleasant Grove
Chubby’s serves hand-pressed ⅓ pound burgers with a host of toppings. Try the jalapeno ranch with beef patty, ham, bacon, Swiss cheese, pepper-jack cheese, American cheese, jalapeno ranch dressing, jalapenos, lettuce, tomato and onion. The buns are made in a local bakery and delivered daily.
4) Cotton Bottom Inn, Salt Lake City
Cotton Bottom is a tiny burger joint and local watering hole, tucked away in Holladay. It’s been a favorite of locals for years, but it doesn’t advertise much, so it takes newbies awhile to figure it out. The menu has a choice of five burgers, but you’re crazy if you don’t get the garlic burger or garlic cheeseburger. Make your significant other get one too -- you’re going to reek later, but it’s totally worth it. Cotton Bottom is a bar, so patrons must be 21 and older.
5) Crown Burger, 7 locations: 5 in Salt Lake City; also in Layton and Sandy
Crown Burger, 7 locations: 5 in Salt Lake City; also in Layton and Sandy
Family owned and operated, Crown Burger opened in 1978 and immediately became a Utah favorite. You’ll find over 100 menu items, including some delicious Greek food such as gyros and souvlakia with tzatziki sauce. But by far, the most popular item is the Crown Burger: a flame-broiled beef patty, piled high with tender pastrami, lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese and thousand island dressing (slightly different than Crown Burger’s delicious fry sauce).
6) Hi Mountain, Kamas
The 2015 Best in State winner of Best Burger in Utah, Hi Mountain has been serving up tasty burgers since 1968. Try the Southern Belle, featuring two kinds of cheese and topped with fried pickle spears.
7) Lucky 13 Bar and Grill, Salt Lake City
Stop in at Lucky 13 before the Bees game (it’s just west of Spring Mobile Ballpark), or for a special occasion or just because it’s a Tuesday and you’re craving a humongous, messy, hunk of burger. The Ring of Fire with habanero and jalapeno peppers will make a grown man cry. The Big Benny, a $17 burger consisting of 28 ounces of ground chuck, bacon, ham, cheddar, swiss and onions, stands a foot tall. Eat the Big Benny and a Lucky 13 Burger all by yourself and they’re on the house -- plus, they’ll pay you $200!
8) Milt’s Stop and Eat, Moab
After a long day hiking or biking on the slickrock, stop and eat at Milt’s. Get your burger in either cow or buffalo varieties and eat it on the patio or sit up at the formica countertop, circa 1954. Milt’s uses hormone-free, grass-fed beef and locally grown vegetables whenever possible.
9) No Name Saloon, Park City
Dine on their rooftop patio in the summer, or snuggle inside after a day on the slopes during ski season. Bring your appetite -- the burgers are ½ pound of buffalo served up with a special, secret No Name sauce. No Name also serves up turkey, chicken and veggie burgers.
10) Patio Grill, St. George
Eating at Patio Grill is just like eating in your backyard...if you had a nicer backyard with wait staff and a grill expert creating hot, juicy burgers just for you. The patio dining is comfortable and the burgers, made with 100% Angus beef, are affordable -- under $8.00.
11) Salt City Burgers, Sandy
The buns are soft and scrumptious, and the burger is ground right at the restaurant, so it’s fresh every single day. They’ve got all the favorites like the Bleu, Western, Smokehouse Bacon, Hawaiian, Swiss and Mushroom and more. Salt City brings you the burger and you complete it to perfection at their toppings bar.
Utahns love extras on their burgers, including bacon, pastrami, pineapple, blue cheese and BBQ sauce. What's your favorite burger topping?
