When you're hungry, there's nothing like finding the perfect meal. In Texas, that's certainly not hard. Almost anywhere you go you'll find a selection ranging from hidden gem burgers to pizza to tacos. But, of course, smoked meat might just be my favorite. Picture thus: the most massive BBQ pit you've ever seen that's full of ribs, brisket, sausage links, and more delectable types of meat all smoking to perfection with a roaring fire burning underneath. If that image makes you hungry, then the Salt Lick BBQ in Texas is the place for you. Some of the juiciest, most flavorful, and tender barbecue you've ever eaten can be found here, and you haven't lived until you've tasted it. Take a trip down to Driftwood and experience it for yourself.
It all started in 1967 when a man named Thurman Roberts, who was known for his mouthwatering BBQ at family reunions, decided to turn his gift into a business.
He built an enormous pit with his two sons, one of whom owns the restaurant today, and slept on a cot outside during the weekend until all the meat had sold out...and the rest is history. In fact, the Salt Lick is more than 50 years old!
Brisket is probably the most popular offering. You can get a plate of it, pork ribs, sausage, turkey, half of a whole chicken, beef ribs, or a combination of any two if you're feeling indecisive. Plates are served with potato salad, coleslaw, beans, and bread, pickles, & onions upon request.
The complete meal is always a thing of beauty.
There are also sandwiches
"as big as Texas."
Enjoy them with either chopped beef, pulled pork & coleslaw, sausage, turkey, or a combination. If you get a sandwich plate, it's served with potato salad, coleslaw, beans, pickles, and onions.
All the meats are served by the pound as well, so if you have a big family or need lots of food for an event, they've got you covered. The sides and barbecue sauce are also served by the pint, quart, and gallon.
You can also choose to dine family-style (AKA all you can eat). If you're a first-timer, this is probably your best bet to ensure you get to try a little bit of everything (or a lot - after your first bite, you'll know there's no stopping until you feel like a stuffed turkey).
Try not to get too full, though, because their dessert is absolutely delectable. You'll find pecan pie, chocolate pecan pie, and blackberry and peach cobbler, all served with a scoop of ice cream.
So if you love meat (which you surely do if you live in Texas), come try out the Salt Lick sometime. You definitely won't regret it - but you know that since your mouth is already watering after looking at these pictures.
Remember that The Salt Lick Texas is BYOB. You can also choose to enjoy a glass of wine from the Salt Lick Cellars. The restaurant is cash-only, so head to an ATM before you arrive!
