This Is the Best Buffet in Texas, Known for Its Southern Comfort Food
The best buffet for Southern comfort food in Texas, Mama Jack's, is a small-town restaurant with a 40-year legacy. The local institution is known for its hearty fare, such as biscuits and gravy, fried catfish, and roasted chicken.
As a native Southeast Texan, Southern comfort foods have been staples for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite places to get them is Mama Jack's in Kountze, the best buffet in Texas for homestyle favorites like chicken-fried steak, biscuits and gravy, and banana pudding. I've been eating here since I was a kid, and the quality, service, and selection are unmatched.
Buffets often get a bad rap, but Mama Jack's is in a whole different league. Here, you never have to worry about how long the food has been sitting out or if it came frozen and prepackaged. Everything is made fresh, and you can taste the quality in every bite. Barbara and Jerry Jackson opened this beloved local eatery in the early 1980s, and the couple owned and operated the restaurant for over 40 years. In 2024, the Jacksons entrusted the Holyfield family with their lifelong legacy, and that's exactly what Jenny, Clay, and their three children have done.
Mama Jack's offers a breakfast and lunch buffet, plus a seafood buffet on Friday and Saturday nights. It's all-you-can-eat—and you better come hungry, because there are so many delicious eats to choose from. The breakfast buffet is full of Southern staples like biscuits and gravy, grits, hashbrowns, and scrambled eggs. If you have a sweet tooth in the morning, donuts fresh from the fryer and warm, gooey cinnamon rolls are calling your name.
The lunch selection is even bigger. If you love meatloaf, fried chicken, mac and cheese, and other stick-to-your-ribs comfort foods, you'll be in heaven here. Everything tastes just like mom and grandma used to make, evoking nostalgia and making you reminisce about cherished memories.
You'll also see dishes like enchiladas, tacos, burritos, pork chops, and so much more, along with soup and a salad bar. The offerings rotate, so no two days look the same, but there's always plenty of variety to please a wide range of palates.
Friday and Saturday nights are always buzzing with patrons who can't get enough of the seafood buffet. Enjoy all of your grilled, fried, boiled, and steamed favorites, including crabs, catfish, and crawfish when in season. Round out the meal with sides like hush puppies and dirty rice, or help yourself to a cup of gumbo or etouffee with rice. There's also live music most weekends, with beer served all day and happy hour in the evenings.
Visit the Mama Jack's website for more information about the restaurant, including current hours and a full sit-down menu, available all day, every day, if you prefer that over the buffet. You can also view prices for the breakfast, lunch, and seafood buffets.
