Travel Off The Beaten Path To Try The Most Mouthwatering BBQ In Tennessee
Have you ever been out to Bluff City, Tennessee? Tucked deep in the heart of East Tennessee, this gorgeous space is filled to the brim with gorgeous scenery and good people, a true homage to the hospitality of The Volunteer State. While you're in the area, take a quick drive up close to the gorgeous mountains to the east, and fall in love with one of the best bbq joints around.
Ridgewood Barbecue is a local staple, found not too far from the bustling college town of Johnson City and the tight knit community of Bristol. Bluff City may not be on the top of your list this year, but we're going to tell you: it's a must-visit.
Found just off of Elizabethton Highway, smoked meat and a tomato based barbecue sauce is king at this fabulous down home institution. Ridgewood Barbecue has made its home in East Tennessee for decades, with many of the locals maturing into regulars.
As you can see, the inside of this humble spot is sweet and rustic. It's where you come to laugh with your community and eat a filling meal for lunch or dinner, especially you're jonesin' for a bbq sandwich.
Don't think you're going to be able to recreate that iconic sauce at home, though. The Proffitt family owns Ridgewood, and they guard the secret recipe with their life. It is rumored to only be written on a piece of paper, hidden away until it is to be passed down. Then? It's burned.
Here's the deal, though - all that secrecy is pretty necessary when it comes to guarding something this good (and profitable!).
Notice that little canister of beans back there? It's served in clay pots alongside its meaty cousin, only serving to heighten the cozy and homey atmosphere.
Folks in Ridgewood come for the blue cheese dip and the perfect barbecue - brisket or ham? It's up to you! Their french fries are dreamy, and we'd recommend ordering a solid side.
Okay, alright - they DO use ham for their meat, but that doesn't undermine the fact that this amazing joint has some delicious sliced pork. Try it, love it, come back for more - you'll be welcomed back with open arms.
You can visit for yourself at 900 Elizabethton Highway, from Monday to Saturday. Their hours differ depending on the day, so plan accordingly! Happy eating, folks.
