In the mood for casual, great-tasting fish and chips? Oregon, with its miles and miles of coastline and robust fish markets, has no shortage of excellent places for seafood. But there's something extra special about eating the best fish and chips in Oregon at a hole-in-the-wall spot that most people would drive on by, never thinking it could offer such tantalizing eats.
But as someone who loves a challenge as much as I love excellent fish and chips, I make it my mission to sleuth out the best, unexpected places to stop for fish and chips along the coast. So, where to go for some of Oregon's most delicious fish and chips? Look no further than Ship Out in Astoria, Oregon. Here you'll feast on fresh fried fish and other beachy specials like crabcakes and fries. This hidden gem serves up plate after plate of fried delicacies to locals and tourists alike.
It may not look like much—and the food is cooked in a trailer rather than a restaurant kitchen. However, at Ship Out, you'll find delicious fish and chips and other yummy eats made to order.
Order at the trailer window. When the weather cooperates, eat outside at picnic tables.
If you'd rather eat inside, make your way to the shop-and-greenhouse-turned-dining room where you'll find a variety of tables.
Ship Out offers a wide variety of seafood. Choose from fried halibut, cod, prawns, scallops, squid, and oysters.
Other menu offerings are fish sandwiches, chowder, seafood Caesar salad, burgers, and chicken strips. Sides include coleslaw, potato salad, and fries.
Thick pieces of lightly breaded, crisply fried fish are served in baskets over fries with coleslaw on the side.
My favorite menu items are the fried halibut and fried shrimp.
For a healthier option, try the Caesar salad with fried shrimp.
In addition to their regular menu, Ship Out often has specials such as these tasty halibut tacos, served with chips and salsa.
Other past specials include deliciously fresh crab cakes and fried salmon.
You'll also find solid burgers and other sandwiches on the menu for those who don't want fish.
Browse the shop while you wait for your food. Discover a variety of gifts, knick-knacks, plants, and arts and crafts.
Whether you're headed to the beach, the coastal forest for a hike, or a local park for a picnic, Ship Out is a great place to get your takeout meal.
A variety of board and card games are also available to play while you wait for your order. After lunch, be sure to check out Astoria's boardwalk along the Columbia River. There you'll find a number of other great restaurants, shops, and activities like the Columbia River Maritime Museum.
Head to the Ship Out Facebook page for more information, including current specials. And if your visit to Ship Out is part of a road trip, don't forget to bring along some portable, car-friendly snacks.
