Here Are The 10 Dishes You Have To Eat In Ohio Before You Die
Ohio offers a variety of iconic and unique dishes that reflect its diverse culinary heritage.
There are some foods that specific areas of the Buckeye State are iconically known for, making for some uniquely delicious dishes all throughout the state. For example, we like our chili dogs piled high with cheese in Cincinnati and only a certain kind of fried bologna will do in northeast Ohio Amish Country. The following are 10 dishes Ohio specializes in---and you need to try them all.
1. Slyman’s corned beef sandwich
Here in Ohio, we have a special place in our hearts for a delicious corned beef sandwich—and Slyman's Restaurant fills that void beautifully. This downtown Cleveland eatery is home to what is arguably the best corned beef you can find in Ohio.
2. Troyer's Trail Bologna and swiss cheese sandwich
There's no bologna like Troyer's Trail Bologna. A fried Trail bologna sandwich with Swiss cheese really hits the spot. This dish is particularly popular in Holmes, Tuscarawas and Wayne Counties.
3. Goetta
This German breakfast sausage will revolutionize your idea of sausage. It is particularly popular in the greater Cincinnati area.
4. Tony Packo’s chili dogs
Although there are several excellent chili dog joints in Ohio, nobody does it like Tony Packo's. For a truly epic chili dog with a wide variety of options, check out this iconic hotdog joint, (and its famous bun museum,) at one of its multiple locations in Toledo.
5. Graeter’s Ice Cream
AKA, the King of Ice Cream.
6. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams
AKA, the Queen of Ice Cream.
7. The 3-Way…
Spaghetti noodles, heaps of shredded cheddar cheese and chili with a hint of cinnamon come together to create this interesting dish. The Cincinnati area's Skyline Chili chain challenges the norm, and many (though not all) find it delicious.
8. …and cheese conies
If the 3-way isn't your preference, Skyline's cheese conies (topped with the signature chili, onions, mustard and mounds of cheese) are an excellent alternative.
9. The Thurmanator
Thurman's Cafe in German Village is home to Ohio's most serious burger. This beloved Columbus burger and restaurant has been featured on television several times, first appearing on the Travel Channel in 2008 in an episode of "Man vs. Food."
10. Wendy’s frosty with fries
No matter what anyone tries to tell you, we started the genius frosty-french-fry-combo creation—just like we started the beloved fast food chain itself.
