North Carolina and barbecue might as well be synonymous. Everyone knows the Q is served best in the Tar Heel state, whichever your preference (Lexington or Eastern). Being home to amazing BBQ also means that we're home to some AMAZING BBQ joints. But one is truly unique, and truly stands out from the rest. BBQ typically comes with a side of slaw and hushpuppies...but how about an airshow as your side?
Located in Carthage, Pik N Pig has been in the BBQ biz for four decades. This family owned and operated business has some AMAZING BBQ...and not to mention the location.
Pik N Pig truly is a 'fly-in' restaurant. It's located right beside Gilliam-Mcconnell Airport. Owned by Roland Gilliam and his wife, the airport is small with a taxiway, hangars, and utility sheds.
Despite its small size - the airport stays quite busy. Sometimes flying golfers to nearby Southern Pines and Pinehurst.
Diners, and those flying in, are treated to a World War II replica P-40 Warhawk fighter plane, named Junkyard Dog. This a great stop for the aviation-enthusiast in the family (who also happens to love BBQ).
Back to BBQ...no matter what you get - pulled pork, brisket, ribs, BBQ chicken...it's going to be AMAZING.
The 'Q' is cooked with hickory and natural hardwood charcoal. It stays cookin' all night long over a natural wood fire. The result - extra juicy meat with extra flavor.
