8 Food Faux-Pas A Buffalonian Should Never, Ever Commit
Guide to avoiding food faux-pas in Buffalo, New York, to blend in like a local.
As New Yorkers, we take our food selections and pairings very seriously, and we're not afraid to voice our concern (or disgust) if you do things differently. Perhaps nowhere in the state is this as true as when you're dining in Buffalo. If you're new around here and want to fit in, consider this your guide to dining like a New Yorker - an unofficial rulebook, if you will. If you're strolling through town and have a hankering for some authentic Buffalo, New York, foods, committing these unforgivable food faux-pas in Buffalo is a sure way to get pinned as a tourist!
1. Dip wings in ranch
Do not – I repeat – DO NOT do this. This is the ultimate Buffalo food faux-pas. Under no circumstance should your wings be dipped in anything other than bleu cheese.
2. Eat chips with any other dip than Bison
Speaking of dipping... the only chip dip that passes the Buffalo test is Bison Dip. End of story.
3. Grill non-Sahlens hot dogs
No other type of hot dog grills up better than a Sahlens, and Buffalonians are very loyal to these summertime favorites. If you're invited to a backyard BBQ in Buffalo, be warned: bringing any other brand will leave you mocked and ridiculed (and probably left without an invitation for the next gathering).
4. Order a beef on weck without the weck
It's called beef on weck for a reason. The kimmelweck roll is what makes this classic Buffalo sandwich. Ordering it on a normal roll - or worse, scraping the toppings off of the kimmelweck - is a serious food faux-pas in Western New York.
5. Choose Dunkin' over Tim Hortons
Morning coffee runs in Buffalo always start with Timmy Ho's, and you'll get bonus points at any workplace if you show up with a pack of assorted Tim Bits.
6. Eat imitation pizza logs
Pizza logs were created right here in Western New York, and no one does it better! Attempting to pass the microwaveable, imitation grocery store pizza logs off as the real deal is a serious no-no in Buffalo.
7. Choose Taco Bell over Mighty
Super Mighty > anything on Taco Bell's menu. Mighty Taco is a Buffalo staple, and trying to defend Taco Bell's offerings is another major food faux-pas. (Side note: Can you say Mighty Taco without getting their jingle stuck in your head? I can't.)
8. Order pizza from a national or non-local chain
There's New York style pizza, and then there's BUFFALO, NEW YORK style pizza. True Buffalonians will always, always choose the latter.
