Anywhere else, you’d call it a submarine, grinder, hero, or a hoagie, but here in New Orleans, it’s called a po’boy. While there are a few different stories floating around about the origin of this iconic sandwich, the most widely believed is that it was invented in 1929 by Bennie and Clovis Martin. The brothers opened the Martin Brothers Coffee Stand and Restaurant in the French Market and came up with the culinary creation after the streetcar strike that same year. The Martin brothers gave away the po’boys to those on strike, and when one of the workers would walk into the restaurant, and the phrase "here comes another poor boy!" rang out.
Almost a hundred years later, and it’s still the sandwich of choice for many a New Orleanian (sorry, muffuletta). You’ll find po’boys on just about every menu in the city, but there’s one place that’s got one of the best roast beef po’boys in town, and you need to give it a try.
There's nothing better than sinking your teeth into a perfect po'boy.
When it comes to po'boys, no one does it better than Parkway Tavern.
This local landmark has been a neighborhood favorite ever since it opened its doors back in 1911.
It's certainly a bit of a time capsule. Everywhere you look, you'll see little pieces of the past adorning the walls.
No matter what your po’boy preference is, Parkway serves it.
Fried oysters, BBQ beef, and alligator smoked sausage are just a few of the overstuffed po'boys you'll find on the menu.
But the fan favorite is the roast beef po'boy.
Made with their house-made, slow roasted beef soaked in that good gravy, this messy po’boy is certainly going to require a stack of napkins to get through.
To get the best of both worlds, go with the surf and turf, which combines their roast beef with fried shrimp. Smothered in gravy, of course.
Be sure to get one or two of their tasty sides. The fried pickle chips are the perfect accompaniment to your po'boy.
If you've still got room, take a peep at their dessert menu. Banana pudding, butter rum cake, and their signature French bread pudding are worth the splurge!
For more information, be sure to check out their website and give them a follow on Facebook.
