Francisca's in Farmington isn't just a delicious bakery, it also boasts some of the best sopapillas in New Mexico! Load up the car and head out - this hidden gem is worth a road trip of its own.

Your go-to neighborhood place in Farmington, Francisca’s is on the end of a strip center on North Butler Ave in the northeastern area of the city.

This family-owned, Mexican restaurant offers excellent food and service, and locals absolutely love it.

It has a basic cafe style, which is not fancy, but you would not expect it to be when you’re paying such reasonable prices. The atmosphere is welcoming and warm, with a pleasant hometown ambiance.

Naturally, delicious chips and salsa are expected at any Mexican restaurant!

But what you also get at Francisca’s are sopapillas, which have been described as “little pillows from heaven.” They are a real treat to end the meal, properly cooked, and crisp on the outside while soft on the inside.

What should you have as your main course? Well, you really couldn’t go wrong with the famous #9 Combo, adored by guests.

But there are many other options on the menu, including chimichangas, tostadas, and taco salad just to name a few.

New Mexican comfort food has, sadly, become hard to come by in recent times as the food culture has started transitioning to more generic 'Mexican' restaurants that serve poorly spiced, beef-heavy, chile-less meals that have traditionally been uncharacteristic for the region.

The name "sopapilla" likely originates from the Spanish "sopaipa," a term for sweet-fried dough. They are often served with honey as you will find at Francisca’s, or savory topped with a fried egg. And just remember...everything is homemade here!
