That’s definitely true if you explore the High Road to Taos, one of New Mexico’s most appealing scenic drives.

Sugar Nymphs Bistro is a hidden gem, located in the small, mountain town of Peñasco.

It doesn’t matter whether you drive the High Road from Santa Fe to Taos, or vice versa.

In order to reach this remote restaurant, you’ll pass by unforgettable scenery.

Forest unfolds in all directions. You’re so high up, it feels as if you’re driving on top of the clouds.

Given the surroundings, it makes perfect sense to discover an eatery as whimsical as Sugar Nymphs Bistro.

The restaurant shares a building with the vibrant Penasco Theatre and the exterior of both makes it clear that you’ve stumbled onto a place that celebrates art and creativity.

Once inside, the atmosphere is low-key and homey.

Classic dishes like grilled cheese sandwiches…

…And burgers are kicked up a notch due to the restaurant’s use of ingredients sourced from local farms. As a result, menus are seasonal and super fresh.

All the bread, pizza, and desserts are made on-site.

The desserts alone justify the drive. The carrot cake is perfectly moist and the chocolate cakes are decadent enough to make you weep.

During the summer, Sugar Nymphs Bistro is open 7 days per week for lunch but, in winter, the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Regardless of the season, the bistro only serves dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings. Call (575) 587-0311 before departing, to verify hours.
