Pizza is the perfect way to refuel after exploring New Mexico. Actually, it’s the ideal way to end most days! From blue corn dough to green chile toppings, New Mexico delivers pizza with a twist. Here are some of the best places in the state to grab a slice of pie.

1. Rooftop Pizzeria, Santa Fe

BLT pizza. Yep, you read that correctly. The folk at Rooftop Pizzeria unite thin crust pie with the essence of a crunchy avocado BLT and the results are sublime.

Other unusual toppings include smoked duck, piñon nuts, and lobster (not all on the same pizza).

If you like the idea of a denser, slightly nutty dough, order a pie with a blue corn crust.

2. J.C.'s New York Pizza Department, Las Vegas

As the name suggests, pies here are New York-style, a.k.a thin crust. Pizzas are named according to areas and boroughs of NYC, like Da Bronx Pizza and Central Park Pizza. (There's also a branch of this restaurant in Albuquerque.)

3. The Pizza Barn, Edgewood

This big, red barn in Edgewood is a great place to hang out. It's equipped with big screen TVs and has 22 beers on draft. Not bad for a restaurant in a town with fewer than 4000 residents.

If you've been hankering to try green chile on pizza, there are plenty of ways to do so here. Order the classic, which pairs pepperoni with green chile, or give your taste buds a good sear with the Barn Burner.

4. Zeffiro Pizzeria Napoletana, Las Cruces

At Zeffiro, the focus is on perfecting the dough. It ferments for twenty-four hours and is then lightly charred in a dual-fuel oven. The result is authentic Neapolitan-style pizza. Any place that serves a pizza with blue cheese and walnuts is a winner in my book!

5. Forghedaboudit, Deming

At Forghedaboudit, you can order upside-down pizza! In other words the sauce, which is both tangy and sweet, is poured on top.

6. Richie B's, Albuquerque

The pizzas here are ginormous. You could use them as a shield. Thankfully, you can also order by the slice, in case you don't have an army on hand to help you devour the 18" pie or the 25" family size.

You can add Hatch green chile to any pizza. And don't forget to sample the infamous viper sauce.

7. Giovanni's Pizzeria, Albuquerque

The New York-style pizza here is so finger-lickin' good that it's been named the 17th best pizza joint in the country by "Time Out!"

8. Cafe Rio, Ruidoso

Watch your pizza being tossed by hand at Cafe Rio. The Kitchen Sink pizza is particularly popular. This place gets busy fast, so it's often best to call in a to-go order.

9. Farina Pizzeria and Wine Bar, Albuquerque

The pizzas here achieve a wonderful level of crispness in a brick oven. Farina's has a great wine list and gives you the option of ordering gluten free pizza dough.

10. Straight Up Pizza, Albuquerque

It's hard to resist pizzas with names like Devil Dog and Chupacabra! The latter packs plenty of heat and comes with the spicy marinara sauce. This is a strictly to-go or delivery place.

11. Golden Crown Panaderia, Albuquerque

You expect pizza dough to be good at a bakery and Golden Crown Panaderia doesn't disappoint. Request blue corn dough or take things to a whole other level by trying the green chile crust. After all, in New Mexico, we can never have enough chile.

12. Il Vicino, Santa Fe and Albuquerque locations

The chef behind Il Vicino perfected his pizza skills while living in Italy. The result is delectable wood-fired pizzas, with super fresh toppings.

13. Dion's, multiple locations

Dion's has a loyal following in New Mexico, with restaurants in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, and Belen. Part Greek restaurant, part pizzeria, you don't want to miss the Duke City pie.
