People Are Going Wild Over the Dutch Pastries at This Small New Jersey Bakery

Holland American Bakery in Sussex, New Jersey, offers a unique blend of traditional Dutch and modern pastries.

On the outskirts of Sussex, in a rural stretch of Sussex County, you'll find a windmill standing tall and a line of hungry Garden State residents waiting for some of the best baked goods in the entire state. Holland American Bakery is a unique Dutch bakery in New Jersey, serving a combination of traditional Dutch treats and modern pastries.

Coming up on 70 years of serving the community, it was founded by an immigrant family from the Netherlands in 1954. Still owned by the third generation of the Valkema family, Holland American Bakery in Sussex, New Jersey is still keeping the old ways while updating its offerings with the times.

The menu changes with the season, but one thing is always consistent. Whether you're a Dutch expat looking for a taste of home, or someone just looking for a new twist on the classic breakfast pastry, we always feel at home here — and so will you.

Holland American Bakery is in the middle of nowhere - but the family behind the bakery came from much further than you did, originally being from the Netherlands! The Dutch pride is strong in this small business, right down to the traditional windmill stationed outside the bakery.

Inside, the bakery still looks much like it did when it opened in the 1950s, with the many decorations accumulated over the decades. The specialties here are the fresh donuts and danishes, all made fresh on site with secret recipes that have been perfected over the generations.

Many of the pastries aren't as familiar as the donuts, with recipes coming directly from the old country. The Holland American Bakery menu is quite diverse. If you're not into sweet pastries, head over to the bread counter. You'll find hearty nut-and-seed-filled breads perfect for traditional Dutch sandwiches.

The bakery also has an American section, featuring cookies and custom cakes perfect for a birthday party. When you're done at the bakery, there's still more shopping to do; a small gift shop contains imported Dutch treats and souvenirs to take back home!

If you want to learn more about what the bakers are whipping up, make sure to visit the official Holland American Bakery website and the Facebook page of the Holland America Bakery. This bakery really is in the middle of nowhere, but it's well worth the drive!
