If it’s great food and an amazing atmosphere you’re after, look no further than Cowboy Jim’s Riverside Restaurant. As the name suggests, the restaurant is located on a river. What the name doesn’t tell you is that the eatery’s grounds are unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
Cowboy Jim’s is nestled on the banks of the Bouie River in the Lone Star community, between the towns of Collins and Prentiss.
Located “out in the middle of nowhere,” it’s definitely the kind of place only locals know about.
Part of what makes the restaurant so unique is that its grounds have been designated a "Certified Wildlife Habitat."
Which means visitors can expect to be greeted by a "wild" welcome wagon.
Step through the front door of the restaurant, and you'll quickly realize the interior is just as amazing as the exterior.
There are several different dining areas in Cowboy Jim's, most of which include waterfront views since the restaurant is located between the Bouie River and Horse Shoe Lake.
Each room has a unique vibe and its own story. The Lodge (pictured) was built after Hurricane Katrina, using downed trees found on the property as well as those from neighbors.
The Houseboat (pictured) is cabled to the main restaurant’s breezeway. It’s a smaller room, perfect for private dinners and parties.
There are also several outdoor seating options - each of which is perfect for taking in the beautiful surroundings.
Aside from the atmosphere, Cowboy Jim’s is known for its mouthwatering hand cut steaks, which are seasoned with Cowboy Jim’s Seasoning and grilled over a bed of hot pecan wood coals.
The fare also includes a variety of seafood. The homemade crab cakes and fresh-from-the-Gulf shrimp and oysters have been raved about by customers.
Be sure to save room for dessert. The Pecan Pie Bread Pudding is a customer favorite, or if you visit on a Thursday, you can’t go wrong with the (free) homemade ice cream.
On Friday and Saturday nights, meals are accompanied by live entertainment. And it's a real possibility that the entertainment could be provided by Elvis.
From St. Patrick's Day to Christmas, Cowboy Jim's takes pretty much every holiday seriously, and that means lots of decorations and costumes to match.
Head to the restaurant during the Christmas season and you'll be in for a real treat - more than two dozen sparkling Christmas trees!
No matter when you visit, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore the grounds.
You'll find several rustic-themed buildings, including the chicken house (which even has a TV!).
And plenty of chickens, of course.
There are even play areas to keep the little ones entertained.
Remember, Cowboy Jim's only accepts cash and checks. There's also an ATM on site.
Visit Cowboy Jim's at 186 Highway 35 in Prentiss on Thursdays from 4 pm – 9 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 4 pm – 10 pm. For more information, click here. Have you ever dined at this unique restaurant? Tell us what you thought in the comments section.
