For a Sugary Dose of Nostalgia, Swing by Big Bear Lodge for One of the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies in Michigan
Serving up warm, gooey nostalgia in Brownstown, Michigan, this cookie is a must-try for chocolate chip lovers. One bite and you're back to your childhood.
The first time I visited Big Bear Lodge, it was cold and crisp outside… the kind of Michigan winter air that feels like it’s trying to exfoliate your soul. We had just learned that a family member would need a new heart at just 23 years old. My partner and I were untethered. So we did what Midwesterners often do when life knocks the wind out of us: We got in the car and started driving, looking for something—anything—that made the world feel familiar again. Sure, Brownstown Township, Michigan has some lovely hiking trails and postcard-worthy lake views, but what we needed that day wasn’t scenery. We needed comfort food.
The second we spotted Big Bear Lodge, it was like someone had wrapped a fleece blanket around my feelings. It stands there like a log cabin out of central casting: vaulted wood beams, stone fireplaces, and a vibe that says, “Yes, we serve meatloaf, and yes, it will heal you.” Inside, we weren’t disappointed. My memory from that season is mostly soft-focus emotional chaos, but I do remember ordering an alcoholic hot chocolate that arrived in an old-school thermos. A thermos, like I was about to hop onto a ski lift with my cool aunt in 1986. That was the exact brand of nostalgic comfort I didn’t know I needed.
So when I got this assignment (hunting down nostalgic sweets in Michigan), I knew I had to make another trip back. Let me just say: Y’all, I am so glad we went.
For starters, Big Bear Lodge is fancier than I remembered. In my head, it was a rustic hideaway with mashed potatoes and mood lighting. Sure, it’s still a place that knows the power of a solid gravy, but it’s also huge, well-staffed, and just plain impressive. The vibe strikes a rare balance between lodgecore charm and elevated dining. You’ll find taxidermy on the walls, sure, but also a staff so friendly and attentive you’d swear they were trained in both hospitality and emotional support. The servers are friendly in that specific Midwestern way that makes you feel like they’d definitely help you jumpstart your car.
We started our meal with a basket of breadsticks: fresh from the oven, golden on the outside, soft and warm inside, with a hint of garlic and a perfectly salted crust. They didn’t just tide us over… they set the tone for the whole meal: warm, comforting, and impossible to stop eating.
Then came the real food. I ordered the Spinach and Artichoke Stuffed Chicken Breast, a dish so good I seriously considered writing it a thank-you note. It’s a fresh chicken breast packed with spinach, artichokes, Parmesan, and cream cheese, served on angel hair pasta and finished with beurre blanc sauce: a buttery, rich finish that made the whole plate feel like a decadent secret. Paired with a tall Bell’s Two-Hearted, it was the kind of meal that shuts down conversation because I was too busy making involuntary happy noises.
My partner went full Southern comfort and got the Honey Fried Amish Chicken: four pieces of crispy, buttermilk-brined bliss, drizzled with honey and served with a candied sweet potato casserole and green beans that somehow weren’t boring. Their mocktail was so delicious and beautifully garnished that it earned its own mini photo shoot.
But let’s be real. You’re here for dessert.
Big Bear Lodge has a whole lineup of sugar-laced showstoppers… from skillet apple pie to a cream puff the size of a small handbag. The menu reads like your childhood dreams grew up, went to culinary school, and came back with better ingredients. Yet our mission was clear: the “Plate Full of Warm Chocolate Chip Cookies.” Worth every second of the wait.
When I say these cookies were perfect, I mean they deserve their own Hallmark movie. Served warm, just barely holding their shape, with crisped edges that give way to a soft, gooey center. The chocolate chips are melty without being runny, and the whole thing tastes like the kitchen you wish you grew up in. They don’t try to reinvent the wheel. They just nail it. It's the chocolate chip cookie you imagine when someone says "chocolate chip cookie:" no sea salt, no browned butter, no clever flour swaps. Just the classic, done impossibly right.
Visit Michigan. Head to Brownstown Township. Take a trip to Lake Erie Metropark, where you’ll find all the fixings for a perfect beach day: meadows, waterfront views, and enough fresh air to remind you you're alive. When the sun starts to dip, make your way to Big Bear Lodge. You’ll eat well, feel better, and if you’re smart, you’ll save room for cookies. Because sometimes, the only thing between you and a better day is a plate full of warm chocolate chip cookies.
