Massachusetts is steeped in history. Some people believe that all that history means this state is steeped in spooks. This beautiful and historic tavern from the 1700s is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal or do some ghost hunting. Here’s what you need to know about dining at The Sun Tavern.
The sign out front proclaims "fine food and spirits," and they're not kidding — The Sun Tavern has tasty fare and its very own ghost.
This Duxbury eatery has been around in some form since 1741, but the hauntings are actually a much more recent occurrence.
Legend holds that the tavern is inhabited by the ghost of Lysander Walker, a hermit who lived in the old building in the late 1800s and shot himself in the living room in 1928.
After Walker’s death, the property was eventually converted to a tavern in the mid-1900s and people began noticing strange happenings.
The owner of the tavern, David Wells, reported that a single candle in the dining room would be relighted each night as the tavern closed.
Local police have also reported hearing disembodied footsteps in the restaurant after responding to an alarm call.
Patrons have also allegedly felt cool breath on their necks while dining and heard creaking footsteps behind them.
Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, The Sun Tavern is a great place to stop for a bite. It specializes in classic New England cooking with flair.
You’ll find everything from crispy Berkshire pork belly to fresh mussels and goat cheese pistachio ravioli on the menu.
If the weather is warm, head outside to their charming patio and enjoy the fresh air.
It's the perfect place to enjoy one of their signature cocktails.
Head to this historic New England tavern for a taste of something delicious and just a bit spooky.
