You’ll Leave Happy And Full At The Salty Owl Cafe, Hidden Inside A Tiny Maine Airport

The Salty Owl Cafe in Maine's Knox County Regional Airport offers a charming and unique dining experience with its homely decor and special hand pies.

It's not uncommon to come across a business in Maine that has a wonderfully lovable story. In fact, some might say that the small business scene here is made up of stories like that. It takes hard-working people with drive and a love of what they do to thrive in Maine and that might be a big part of the reason that The Salty Owl Cafe is so beloved.

From the outside, The Knox County Regional Airport already looks a little bit adorable. It has a red roof and it's exactly the size that one might expect a regional Maine airport to be.

That's why you might not be surprised to find that The Salty Owl cafe is as lovely as it is. Hurried airport food this is not!

Erin and Casey Dominguez moved from New Mexico to Maine to open the cafe, sight unseen. With experience in the restaurant business, they thought they'd be getting seasonal jobs. But when the space for the cafe was available, they jumped on it.

The first order of business was changing the feel from cafeteria to something homier.

Today you'll find antique furniture and vintage accessories.

The breakfast and lunch menu are extensive and feature the kind of food that's great to linger over or take with you.

The Salty Owl is located before passengers go through security, which means this spot is a destination for those who don't even have plane tickets.

The menu is delicious, but they're known for some seriously special hand pies.

They might just be the perfect airport food! Easy to carry away, but great to eat with a fork and knife while dining in the cafe. And they come in unique flavors such as ricotta chicken with lemony chicken, ricotta, basil and roasted summer squash with marinara and pork chile verde featuring braised pork, poblano peppers, grilled onions and potatoes with salsa verde.

Whether you're en route or planted firmly in Owls Head, this is a great place to come and spend some time.

The Salty Owl Cafe is open during their on-season Friday through Monday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can learn more about them on their website, or visit them on Facebook. You can reach them on 207-594-0018.

The Salty Owl isn' the only place located in a unique place. The Olde Post Office Cafe in a small town post office will charm you!
