This Is the Best Buffet in Maine, Known for Its Indian Cuisine

One of the best restaurants in Portland is famous for its all-you-can-eat lunch buffet.

Portland, Maine never fails to impress, especially when it comes to cuisine. From regional to international, the variety is unmatched. Next time I visit the city, I'm looking forward to making a trip to Taj Indian Cuisine, which many claim to be one of the single best buffets in the state—and it's easy to see why. With a warm ambiance, fresh ingredients, and truly inspired dishes, this restaurant promises to wow.

Welcome to your new favorite culinary gem! What began as a humble business in South Portland in 2012 has since blossomed into a beloved local staple, thanks to the dedication and passion of the Guntaka Family. Authenticity and dedication are at the heart of this kitchen, which is run by restaurant founder Sai Guntaka and his mother, Chef Hemalatha Reddy Guntaka, who has mastered the art of traditional Indian spices.

Each and every item on the menu is crafted with love, care, and traditional ingredients sourced directly from India. The result? A bucket-list-worthy dining experience. Due to popular demand, the restaurant expanded to a new location in 2024, now operating in a space three times the size of its original.

While a full-service menu is available for lunch and dinner, one of the best introductions to the restaurant is the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, which offers an impressive selection of the kitchen's most popular dishes. From butter chicken to veggie aloo, saag paneer, and chicken korma, the offerings are top-notch and just-out-of-the-kitchen fresh. Your table will also receive a basket of fresh naan—the perfect way to complement your meal. Diners describe the buffet as "incredible," "perfection," and "a must."

And while the lunch buffet is certainly a crowd pleaser, folks are equally impressed with the traditional menu, specials, craft cocktails, and desserts. In fact, you may want to plan on several visits to ensure you experience everything on offer.

Food is the heart and soul of this restaurant, but so is community. The restaurant hosts community events and also donates leftovers to local food shelters. As stated on the website, "Join us at Taj to experience not just a meal, but a story of perseverance, tradition, and community. We can't wait to welcome you."

Not yet convinced? Consider this recent rave review, which seems to summarize it beautifully: "Chef's kiss. Perfection. I love this place - first restaurant that comes to mind when thinking about going out to dinner in the Portland area." And in my opinion, that's saying something!
