Before I went on my first hike, I constantly read stories about hiking, and one trail, in particular, always caught my attention. Something about the legendary Appalachian Trail resonated with me; perhaps it's the idea of leaving life behind for months to hike thousands of miles and reconnect with nature on the ultimate adventure. While the AT may be out-of-reach for some of us (admittedly, me), we have so many epic hiking trails, that are much shorter but just as amazing, right here in Pennsylvania. If you enjoy hikes that lead to breathtaking scenery and abandoned ruins, add this iconic trail in Pennsylvania to the top of your bucket list.

Some of Pennsylvania’s most iconic trails feature some pretty hefty challenges, but the rewards are usually well worth it. Take the Mount Joy Trail to Mount Misery Trail Loop, a 3.8-mile trek that meanders through Valley Forge National Historical Park as an example. It scores a moderate rating, but some hikers say it’s on the easier side, depending on your experience and physical condition.

The biggest challenge of the iconic trail in Pennsylvania is the elevation. Be prepared for steep climbs, especially once you head into the forested area of the trail. To ensure a smoother hike, wear hiking boots. The trail is comprised of dirt and gravel, although you’ll have to deal with some rocky, areas, too, so shoes that support your ankles are a good idea. As always, carry plenty of water. Trees offer ample shade during the forest portion of the trail, but part of the trail has no shade, which can get uncomfortable on a hot summer day.

Expect to run into a lot of other people, especially on cooperative weather days. Sometimes you can beat the crowds by heading out early in the morning, but that’s not typically the case with the Mount Joy Trail to Mount Misery Trail Loop, particularly on the weekends.

If you’re up for the uphill climbs and sometimes unsteady terrain, you’ll be treated to such manmade and natural beauty as lush foliage, flowing creeks, vibrant wildflowers, and sweeping views of the park. Pass over a fairy-tale footbridge that crosses over a small stream, along a winding dirt path flanked by fields, and through a wooded patch that’s home to abandoned ruins slowly being reclaimed by nature. You might even pass a few waterfalls, depending on whether it’s rained recently.
