Open Since 1926, Muscatine Maid-Rite Has Been Serving Loose Meat Sandwiches In Iowa Longer Than Any Other Restaurant

Muscatine Maid-Rite in Iowa offers a nostalgic dining experience with its famous loose meat sandwiches and retro ambiance.

Iowa is known for being a state full of carnivores. After all, Iowa Beef and Iowa Pork are both world famous! If you ask around about the Hawkeye State's favorite meals is, you'll likely hear a whole lot of people mention Maid-Rite sandwiches.

Did you know that you can still visit the original home of the Maid-Rite sandwiches here in Muscatine, Iowa?

Muscatine Maid-Rite opened in 1926 when butcher Fred Angell decided to sell his creation - a loose meat sandwich - to the public via walk-up window.

Eventually, Angell and his son opened the first car-hop style restaurant around, and soon franchisees opened their own Maid-Rite restaurants around Iowa.

Today, Muscatine is still home to the original Maid-Rite sandwiches, and you can enjoy them in a retro setting.

Pick a song from the Jukebox and sit down in a comfortable leather chair while you wait on your old fashioned feast!

You can even play some pinball while you wait. This retro restaurant will certainly remind you of your childhood.

Every Maid-Rite comes with their signature pickles and crispy shoestring fries - just like they did back in 1926!

Maid-Rites are still crafted with the secret blend of spices and seasonings, and you can order them with or without cheese.

If you're looking for something a little more filling, try a chili cheese rite! This is a loose meat sandwich smothered in cheese and topped with homemade chili. Yum!

Order an old fashioned milkshake to pair with your sandwich and you'll be enjoying one of Iowa's favorite meals. There's nothing like combining history with food for a great time.

Where's your favorite place to pick up a Maid-Rite sandwich? Some restaurants call them Taverns, like Canteen Lunch in the Alley. Whatever you call them, they're certainly a timeless Iowa tradition.
