A Little-Known Slice Of Iowa History Can Be Found At This Roadside Cafe
Iowa's highways and byways are a unique way to explore the Hawkeye State, and some have over a century of history along the way. A perfect example is the historic Lincoln Highway, one of the most important early highways. Today, it's an official scenic byway dotted with small towns that allow you to follow the path of those early drivers and stop in the places they did. Many of the businesses along the way have come and gone over the decades, of course - but not all of them. One unique, historic roadside cafe in Iowa has been given a new lease on life by a team of dedicated volunteers. The Youngville Cafe in the tiny town of Watkins is still standing, lovingly preserved. When you stop in, you'll get a unique look at history - and for a few hours each week, a delicious meal.
The Lincoln Highway is a peaceful byway, full of remnants of what was once a bustling highway. Along the way, you'll come across unique historic buildings.
You'll also encounter countless fascinating small towns and tourist spots that expound upon the history of the region for visitors.
One of the best examples is the Youngville Cafe, a historic cafe and roadside stop in Watkins that used to host a cafe, a gas station, and a trio of cabins.
First built in 1931, it had since closed - but it was lovingly restored and kept operating as a visitor's center by a dedicated team of volunteers.
The coolest part is that the cafe still exists - and is opened periodically for breakfast and lunch, usually one day a week from spring to fall.
The entire operation is staffed by volunteers, who give it a wonderful old-school feel with a limited but delicious menu.
The one thing everyone agrees on? No matter what's on the menu, make sure you leave with a slice of the cafe's famous pie.
