The Ultimate Loco Moco Tour: My Unbeatable Spots for Hawaii’s Most Delicious Comfort Food

I set out on a mission to find the most mouthwatering versions of this classic dish, visiting four celebrated spots with unique takes.

There’s something about loco moco that I can’t resist. This iconic Hawaiian dish, featuring rice, a hamburger patty, gravy, and eggs, is the epitome of comfort food. Loco moco is my ultimate comfort food: hearty, savory, and oh-so-satisfying. It’s a dish that represents Hawaii’s melting pot of culinary traditions, combining rice, a juicy burger patty, rich gravy, and perfectly cooked eggs. On a recent trip to Honolulu, I set out on a mission to find the most mouthwatering versions of this classic dish, visiting four celebrated spots with unique takes.  Here’s where I went, what I loved, and what else you might want to try when you visit.

Hamada General Store

At Hamada General Store, it’s all about the gravy. Their loco moco features a dark, rich, and intensely flavorful sauce that ties everything together beautifully. Served with two perfectly cooked eggs, a massive portion of white rice, and a thick, juicy all-beef burger patty, this dish doesn’t skimp on portions or flavor. The potato mac salad on the side was a light, creamy complement to the heavier main dish.

If you’re looking for hearty comfort food that can easily feed two people, this is the spot. At $18.00, the quality and portion size make it worth every penny. Upgrade it to their Ribeye Moco if you’re feeling fancy. Don’t leave without trying some of their other homestyle specials, like the Kimchi "Rueben" or Salmon Katsu.

Goofy’s Café & Dine

Goofy’s name (surfer lingo, where the right food is forward on the surfboard) belies its bohemian, airy vibe, and their loco moco is no joke. Made with Big Island beef and topped with a medium-bodied gravy packed with flavor, this dish was a standout. My daughter and I loved it so much that we went back for a second time during our trip! It’s served with brown rice, making it feel a touch lighter and incredibly satisfying. At $21.00, it’s one of the higher-priced options, but one of the most memorable.

Goofy’s commitment to local ingredients sets them apart. Their acai bowls and ahi poke are also worth trying if you’re exploring more of their menu. The relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere made it a favorite for us.

Liliha Bakery – Nimitz Location

Liliha Bakery’s loco moco stands out for its smoky, charcoal-grilled hamburger patty and perfectly cooked over-easy eggs. The rich, medium-bodied gravy had a subtle complexity that paired perfectly with the generous serving of white rice. While the traditional loco moco was a hit, I can only imagine how their famous kimchi rice would elevate the dish even further.

This bakery-turned-diner also deserves a shoutout for its incredible butter rolls, served warm with every table order. The bakery itself is a treasure trove of sweet treats — don’t leave without picking up a cocoa puff or two. At $18.50, the loco moco is reasonably priced for its quality and comes with a side of nostalgia thanks to Liliha’s long-standing history in Honolulu.

Rainbow Drive-In

Rainbow Drive-In is a local institution, and their loco moco is as approachable as it is affordable. At just $11.75, this was the most budget-friendly option I tried, but it didn’t skimp on flavor. Two hamburger patties topped with a special house-made gravy and served with two scoops of rice and macaroni salad made for a classic, no-frills plate.

This spot has been serving Hawaii since 1961, and their experience shows in the consistency of their dishes. If you’re in the mood for variety, their mixed plate options are also highly recommended — think barbecue pork sandwich and fried mahi-mahi. And for a quick, affordable, satisfying bite on the go, this is the place to be.

Sampling loco moco across these four spots gave me a renewed appreciation for the dish’s cultural significance and versatility. Originally created in the 1940s in Hilo, loco moco was designed as an affordable, filling meal for locals, but it has since become a beloved staple of Hawaiian cuisine. Each restaurant I visited brought its own unique twist to the dish, whether it was Hamada General Store’s unbeatable gravy, Goofy’s focus on locally sourced ingredients, or Liliha Bakery’s smoky, grilled patty.

If you’re in Honolulu, make it a mission to try one — or all — of these iconic spots. Each offers something special, and together, they showcase the creativity and care that goes into making Hawaii’s ultimate comfort food.

Need a good hike after all that delicious food? My family enjoyed the challenge of Oahu's Ka'iwi Shoreline Trail. And if you need somewhere to stay on Oahu, VRBO always has some great options.
