The Historic Restaurant In Georgia Where You Can Still Experience Southern Hospitality
Weaver D’s in Athens, Georgia, offers a nostalgic dining experience with its classic Southern soul food and rich local history.
Times have changed over the years, and in many ways, that's a good thing. We love air conditioning and the wonders of modern medicine! But it's perfectly normal to miss the good old days when things felt a little simpler and more laid-back. The world may not have time machines yet, but one place where you can still experience a taste of the past is Weaver D's restaurant in Athens, Georgia. This old southern restaurant in Georgia has been a Classic City staple for decades and is as ingrained in the local culture as the B-52s or Kirby Smart. Next time you're on a day trip to this wonderful city, make sure to plan a lunch stop at Weaver D's in Georgia.
Hidden gem it is not: Weaver D's is hard to miss, with the bright green walls! It's tucked away just outside of the city's bustling downtown area, but still within walking distance of the university.
Weaver D's opened up in 1986 and was an instant hit with locals. The restaurant can hold around 40 diners.
It gained national fame in 1992 when local band-turned-superstars R.E.M. named their eighth album "Automatic for the People." The catchphrase is the Weaver D's slogan and on the restaurant's sign outside.
Fittingly, there's plenty of R.E.M. memorabilia on the walls of Weaver D's.
The restaurant serves up soul food classics like chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and okra.
There are a variety of sides to choose from. You won't find anything fancy, just good old-fashioned Southern-style cooking.
The food and friendly atmosphere here will make you feel like you're eating your grandma's cooking.
It's no wonder that Weaver D's was the recipient of the prestigious James Beard America's Classic award. The honor is given to family-owned restaurants that have "timeless appeal" and a special place in the local community.
