A SoCal Dining Experience so Exceptional, It’s Nationally Recognized
Craving pasta? There's nowhere better to get it than San Diego's Cesarina, an award-winning restaurant that serves life-changing dishes.
Not only is California the United States' largest agricultural producer, but it's also one of the country's most diverse states. Every year, almost half a million people move to the Golden State, bringing along their unique cultures, backgrounds, and talents. With this in mind, it's no wonder that California supports a legendary restaurant scene, attracting culinary visionaries who've almost single-handedly changed the way the world approaches food.
Though you can still find a disappointing dinner here and there, I'd argue you can just as easily find a life-changing meal in California. When it comes to cities like San Diego, there's no shortage of restaurants worth mentioning. Still — boasting charming interiors, warm hospitality, and paradigm-shifting food — it's hard not to be smitten by Cesarina, the perennial gem of San Diego's Point Loma Heights neighborhood.
Despite belonging to a rarified class of United States restaurants — it won a Michelin star in 2021 — Cesarina feels remarkably approachable. Its atmosphere is intimate and convivial, more cozy neighborhood bistro than fuddy-duddy ristorante. In my opinion, paring back the environment's frills allows the food to shine. After all, what will keep you returning time and time again to Cesarina is the expertly crafted pasta, not a pastiche of exclusivity. And did I mention there are two dog-friendly patios?
Incredibly, Cesarina makes each of their pastas to order. That is, each strand of fettucine, each globe of gnocchi, and each curl of penne is hand-crafted within the view of diners at the pastificio. The pastificio is easily one of Cesarina's greatest innovations — a glass-enclosed pulpit where pasta-making is elevated to a kind of performance art. Another of Cesarina's innovations is their pasta recipe. While most of us include eggs in our homemade dough, their recipe is exclusively flour and water. This results in pasta with the al dente bite of the dried stuff and the starchy goodness of a freshly made batch. Oh, and it's totally vegan.
It's impossible to order wrong at Cesarina. Whatever you choose, you're getting the best. Still, I recommend erring toward the classics. The restaurant's rendition of pasta al pomodoro, for example, is guaranteed to imprint a new core food memory in diners. Like all good Italian fare, it's a masterclass in emphasizing an ingredient's true flavors. Never has a tomato tasted so tomatoey, basil so basilific. It's a credit to the vision and talent of Cesarina's kitchen, headed by savory chef Cesarina Mezzoni. It will also ruin you for lesser iterations of these beloved dishes.
Without a doubt, what shines at Cesarina is the pasta. Still, if you have the willpower, save room for dessert. I'm a diehard tiramisu fan, but their crackly-creamy and supremely indulgent cannoli is equally beguiling. If you don't make it to dessert on your first visit, treating your sweet tooth is a great excuse for future pilgrimages.
Whether you're a local or visiting from out of town, if you're looking for an incredible dining experience in southern California, I recommend visiting San Diego's Cesarina. Though it's won numerous awards, including a coveted Michelin star, this charming trattoria has remained true to itself, serving exceptional pasta without pretense in an inviting atmosphere that makes diners feel right at home.
