The Grand Canyon State is known for many things -- natural wonders, epic hiking trails, and scenery -- just some of the reasons why I love living here. And it's also known for some incredible regional specialties like fry bread, Mexican food, and Sonoran hot dogs. Now, regular hot dogs are great and all but a Sonoran hot dog...well, there's a reason why they're so popular here. If you don't know what a Sonoran hot dog is, it's a perfect creation made with a bacon-wrapped hot dog set inside a bolillo-style hot dog bun and topped with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, and other toppings that include anything from jalepeños to mayo, mustard, and/or salsa. Here's where to get the best Sonoran hot dogs in Arizona.
1. El Guero Canelo, Tucson (multiple locations)
With three locations around the city of Tucson, El Guero Canelo is a popular spot for Sonoran hot dogs. The owner of this local franchise, Daniel Contreras, was born in Sonora and decided to open up a hot dog stand and serve Sonoran food back in 1993. His food became so popular and business grew. Known for its Sonoran hot dogs, this is the best place in town to get one.
2. Lupita's Hot Dogs, Phoenix
Lupita's Hot Dogs is a local hole-in-the-wall hot dog joint located at Bell and 32nd in Phoenix. One bite of a Sonoran dog and you'll understand why this place has so many repeat customers.
3. Bow Wow Street Dogs & Grill, Flagstaff
If you find yourself in Flag, make your way to Bow Wow Street Dogs & Grill where you can indulge in burgers, cheesesteaks, and, you guessed it, hot dogs! The Sonoran dogs here are considered the best in Flagstaff. The bacon-wrapped dogs are topped with cotija, pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, jalepeño sauce, sour cream, mayo, mustard, and fried jalepeño all in a bolillo roll. Delicious!
4. El asadero pv, Prescott Valley
Prescott Valley also has an awesome place to get Sonoran hot dogs. El asadero pv is home to some of the best Mexican food in town. And their Sonoran-style dogs are incredible!
5. Simon's Hot Dogs, Scottsdale
Simon's Hot Dogs allows you to create your own hot dog. Choose from 10 toppings and choose a sausage that includes Colombian chorizo, bratwurst, vegetarian, or vegan options. You can even order a plant-based Sonoran hot dog (pictured here). It's nice to know that you don't have to be a meat-eater in order to enjoy a Sonoran-style dog.
