Lavelle's Bistro is located right in the heart of downtown Fairbanks along the Chena River. In fact, it lies right at the spot where a riverboat named the Lavelle Young ran aground in 1901 and the Wickersham family was unceremoniously let off the boat on the riverbank. This led to their trading post being built at this location, which eventually turned into a Gold Rush boomtown, which was Fairbanks. The Golden Heart City still thrives in this picturesque location.
But this elegant restaurant is a far cry from the town's rustic beginnings. Lavelle's brings fine dining and exquisite wine to the interior of Alaska. The large glass walls let light flood the room and glitter off the hundreds of bottles in the large rack. Lavelle's is owned by Kathy Lavelle and Frank Eagle, local restauranteurs who have kept Fairbanks nicest restaurant afloat for 15 years. This place is clean, classy and right for any celebratory occasion, or simply a great date.
They have an excellent menu of modern dishes with international influences and a superb ambiance, but the real star is their 4000 bottle wine list curated by owner Kathy Lavelle, an expert sommelier.
The open kitchen and bar add to the progressive feel, as do the high top tables and chairs in the bar area. With modern art lining the walls and a smartly dressed staff, the vibe is so chic, you'll forget you're in Alaska.
Bourbon Street Shrimp is one of the house specialties. Blackened shrimp are served piping hot in a delectable bourbon sauce with excellent house made crusty french bread.
The Maine Lobster Cakes are a hit as well, served gently browned over a bed of greens with an expertly crafted remoulade.
Lamb chops, romanesco and Yukon gold potatoes make for an elegant plate. Lavelle's is proud to use local Alaska Grown products and certified Angus beef.
Interesting seasonal specials accompany the standard menu to spice things up. This Warm Blue Cheese and Apple Salad is perfect for a cold winter evening.
Of course, fresh Alaskan seafood is part of the appeal, including King Crab legs, salmon and oysters fresh from Alaskan waters. You can add a King Crab leg to any entree to make any dinner a feast.
