The Oldest Lake In Florida Is A Beautiful Piece Of Living History

Kingsley Lake in Florida is a unique, circular, and historically significant lake formed by a sinkhole.

When you live in Florida, oceans and beaches are generally all the rage. But that really is most relevant when you live close to the coast. If you’re more centrally located and you don’t feel like venturing out to the ocean or Gulf, then Florida lakes are the next best thing. When you have a lake like this one, which happens to be extremely unique in shape as well as in history, you won’t even miss the ocean at all. That phenomenon is Kingsley Lake in Florida and it’s a great destination to spend the day. And you’ll be surprised to know that it's the oldest lake in the Sunshine State.

Kingsley Lake in North Central Florida is a true anomaly when compared to other lakes within the state…and country.

Clocking in at around 2,000 acres in size, Kingsley Lake is special because it is almost perfectly circular in shape—but also considered the oldest and highest lake in Florida.

The lake remains fairly shallow compared to others in the U.S. but deep for Florida, with the deepest part being only around 90 feet in depth.

Some nickname this lake "Silver Dollar Lake" because of the circular shape and unique features.

In fact, what’s even more mind-blowing is the fact that this lake was formed as a result of a sinkhole!

A true marvel of geological and historical wonder, Kingsley Lake also remains much of a mystery to many of the nearby residents.

For instance, many residents do not know that at one point, a hundred years ago, the lake was settled by tons of year-round residents, plus peppered with post offices, churches, and a school.

Kingsley was one of the largest of the settlements in the state at a population of around 200 but now has become a Mecca for fun, sun, and water within the state.

The next time you want to visit one of the oldest and most underrated lakes in Florida, Kingsley Lake should be the choice.
