A future of high-speed travel could be closer than we think.
The past years have seen several attempts to bring a high-speed train to Florida, but all have failed. Until now, that is. Just recently, the rail service provider Brightline has announced that it won't be long before these trains are in operation. As early as this summer, several of these high-speed trains could be up and running from Miami to Orlando. Here's more on what's been confirmed thus far:
This past Wednesday proved to be a historic day for Brightline, the railway carrier which will operate several high-speed trains in southern Florida.
For the first time, these locomotives have been put on display for public viewing.
The first set released is known as "BrightBlue" and consists of four passenger coaches and two locomotives. Following sets will be known as BrightOrange, BrightPink, BrightRed and BrightGreen, all of which could be up and running by this summer.
These high-speed trains will create a quicker way for tourists and residents to travel between Orlando and Miami.
These initial operations will run from Orlando to West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.
So just how fast is high-speed? Some trains are expected to reach speeds of 125 MPH.
The entire stretch from Orlando to Miami should take approximately three hours, which developers claim is the about the same time it takes to get to the airport, navigate security and fly the same distance.
Some other perks to expect with the Brightline experience include multiple power outlets at every seat and free Wi-Fi.
The service will also include options for quick snacks or larger meals, either at the stations or on the train.
Despite these exciting advancements in travel, not all are sold on the idea of this form of transportation.
A group known as the Citizens Against Rail Expansion argue that this developing rail station could compromise safety. The route of the railway actually divides first responders from their local hospitals in some places.
Not only is this release significant for its technological advances, but its also the first time a U.S. rail service has been privately run and operated in 100 years.
Officials are expecting nearly 3 million passengers in the first year of operation. By 2018, it’s predicted that the number of passengers will jump to 5.5 million.
