In Walton County, Florida, there are 15 named coastal dune lakes which are situated along 26 miles of the coastline.
These lakes are actually extremely rare in terms of geography. The only other places in the world where coastal dune lakes are found are Madagascar, New Zealand, Australia, and Oregon!
What makes coastal dune lakes so important is the fact they are shallow and irregularly shaped, occurring only in coastal communities that share in a connection with a body of water where saltwater and freshwater are exchanged.
This is the only place in Florida where kayakers can paddle in a tannic lake, surrounded by sand dunes, and look over into the aquamarine waters of the Gulf.
