The "Most Hated Fort In The West" played a role in Red Cloud's War. The Fetterman Fight in 1866 and the Wagon Box Fight in 1867 were staged in the lands surrounding the fort.

Today, you can tour the Fort Phil Kearny Historic Site, which is home to the remnants of the buildings that made up this trading post before it closed for good in 1868 due to the Treaty of Laramie.

While there's a historic site tour during daylight hours, the best time to tour Fort Phil Kearny is under a full moon, in the dead of night. Every year, the Fort hosts an eerie nighttime adventure.
