The JCPenney mother store in Kemmerer, Wyoming, offers a unique glimpse into the history of the iconic retail chain and early Wyoming life.
When James Cash Penney opened his very own "Golden Rule Store" in Kemmerer, Wyoming in 1902, he had no idea the impact he would make on the culture of the United States over the next century. At one point, JCPenney was the largest catalog retailer in the world, and this iconic department store has been a household name for decades. It all started in small town Wyoming, and you can still visit the JCPenney mother store in Kemmerer today.
Penney bought out the original owners of Golden Rule in 1909. By 1913, Penney opened more than 30 stores and consolidated them all under the JC Penney name.
At its peak, JCPenney operated more than 2,000 stores, worldwide! While the iconic chain is not quite that large anymore, the original store in Kemmerer still stands today.
