Most People Have No Idea This Unique Tunnel In Wisconsin Exists
Rails-to-trails programs convert old railroads into trails for biking and biking. The Elroy-Sparta has the distinction of being the oldest in the country. But the best parts of this trail are the tunnels. There are 3, but Tunnel #2 is a fan favorite.
1. This trail is 32 miles long.
2. 50 trains used to pass through this trail each day.
3. Now, it hosts up to 60,000 bicyclists each year.
4. All along the trail, expect to see rolling hills and farmland.
5. What you'll notice about this tunnel is that it has 20 foot doors.
6. The doors were included to prevent snow from filling the tunnels.
7. This meant there were two train watchmen whose job it was to open these doors each day.
8. The tunnel is 1,694 feet long.
9. The tunnels are a cool 50-60 degrees, no matter what temperature it is outside.
