In the shadow of the Wisconsin state Capitol, there’s a spot that’s the center of the cheese world. Fromagination is a little cheese market that takes cheese very, very seriously. The shop is like an art gallery of goodness, featuring a curated selection of some of the best cheeses in Wisconsin. If you’re a serious foodie or just like tasting some delicious cheese, this is a spot you’ll want to visit. Here’s what’s waiting for you at Fromagination in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Capitol Square has long been a center of commerce in Madison – the streets that ring the historic state Capitol are filled with stores and restaurants and on the weekends during warmer months, a huge farmers’ market draws swarms of shoppers.
In the middle of all this activity is a little shop that’s gained a big reputation among cheese lovers. Fromagination is a cheesy wonderland that’s home to some extraordinary cheeses.
The shop was founded in 2007 by owner and general manager Ken Monteleone. He wanted to create a space that showcased and celebrated Wisconsin’s storied cheesemaking tradition and growing food movement.
Fromagination is foodie heaven. It’s a European-style shop where cheesemongers cut slices of cheese to order from large wheels. Tell them where to make the spot and they will cut a piece that’s just the right size for you!
The store carries an ever-changing selection of more than 100 cheeses. You’ll find a wide variety of styles in the shop but the majority have something special in common – they were all produced in Wisconsin.
The shop also has a variety of other culinary offerings that pair well with cheese, so a trip here is one-stop shopping if you’re planning a simple but elegant picnic or are entertaining for guests.
Fromagination is open Tuesday-Saturday. Learn more about the shop and its latest offerings on its website. If you love great Wisconsin cheese, here’s a remarkable journey you’ll definitely want to take. And while you're on your cheese journey in Wisconsin, be sure to visit the oldest cheese shop in the state!
