Lost River State Park is an out-of-the-way state park tucked away in Mathias, West Virginia. If you've visited this park, you know what a hidden treasure it is. Even if you haven't, you may have heard tell of it - this is the state park with the Cranny Crow Overlook, a remote observation shelter from which you can see five counties and two states. It also has 26 vacation cabin rentals, miles of hiking trails, and thousands of acres of beautiful mountain terrain.
Here's what you might not have known about Lost River State Park: you can tour it by horseback.
Through October 31, Hidden Trails Stables is offering weekend fall-foliage trail rides through the scenic park, including to the beloved Cranny Crow Overlook.
You can even hit Cranny Crow at sunset for an extra memorable ride! Of course, Hidden Trails Stables offers rides during other seasons of the year as well; it's just that fall is such a nice time to be out exploring the Mountain State.
Imagine the view: fall colors for miles, all illuminated and amplified by the sun's golden hour glow.
The trail rides vary in length from half-an-hour to two hours. Rather than the trip to Cranny Crow, you could instead opt to ride along the Light Horse Harry Lee Trail or enjoy a variety of shorter-length-trail options, with prices for the half-hour to two hour rides ranging from $20 per person to $45 per person.
There's even a hand-held pony ride for kids on a just-for-ponies trail for just $5.
So come explore Lost River State Park from a new vantage point - astride a gentle but magnificent horse.
Rides are weather dependent and come with age and weight restrictions: riders must be under 250 pounds and ages seven and above (except for the supervised pony ride, which can accommodate younger children).
