A Pedestrian Bridge With A View, West Virginia’s Alderson Bridge Offers A Walk To Remember
The Alderson Memorial Bridge in West Virginia is a historic pedestrian bridge known for its unique concrete arch design and scenic views.
With all our mountains and rivers, perhaps it's not suprising that we have so many fascinating bridges. We've got the New River Gorge Bridge, of course, and also the Wheeling Suspension Bridge and the Via Ferrata and the Parkersburg Railroad Bridge and the Philippi Covered Bridge. And while that's a long list, it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of all the interesting, scenic bridges in West Virginia. Another is the Alderson Memorial Bridge, a pedestrian bridge over the Greenbrier River in Alderson, West Virginia.
The Alderson Memorial Bridge is a concrete arch bridge that spans Greenbrier and Monroe Counties by crossing the Greenbrier River in the West Virginia town of Alderson.
It was built in 1914 to carry vehicles over this river that bisects the town of Alderson so neatly.
Now, however, the more-than-100-year-old bridge is closed to vehicle traffic.
It's still open to foot traffic, though, and this historic pedestrian bridge, with its beautiful river view, is a fun, memorable part of exploring the historic district in downtown Alderson.
As you cross the bridge, you'll be interested to know that it's the only concrete arch bridge in the whole state of West Virginia. That's a pretty impressive claim to fame!
Have you ever crossed the Alderson Memorial Bridge? Here's another great part about the experience: there's no wrong time to visit. Catch it decked out for the holidays in wintertime, for example, or enjoy the lush green river valley view in the summer.
And while you're in the area, don't miss the Alderson Lion statue that patrols the riverbank near the bridge.
