There are many places in our beautiful state that have, inexplicably, been forgotten and left to nature to reclaim. Yet, those that stand are eerily beautiful reminders of what once was there. These photos of abandoned places in Washington speak to the power of nature and the fleeting character of manmade structures that aren't maintained. Takes a look at some of these abandoned towns in Washington.
1. Nighthawk, WA
There isn't much left in Nighthawk, a former mining town near Oroville, however you can explore this enchanting old mill!
2. Gas station - Hartline, WA
You may not be able to pump gas at this station anymore, but its antique condition makes for an interesting sight to see.
3. Bodie, WA
Nature beautifully encompasses this shed in the northeast ghost town, Bodie!
4. Sherman, WA
This collapsed house was spotted in the vacant town of Sherman, which once thrived from the agricultural boom in the 1800s, but was abandoned after the price of wheat fell and better vehicles & roads made traveling easier.
5. Govan, WA
Not much is known about this abandoned schoolhouse in Govan, west of Spokane, but it is thought that it was occupied in the early 1900s.
6. Lester, WA
This isolated building was photographed in Lester, located just south of Snoqualmie Pass.
7. Liberty, WA
The Thomas Meagher Cabin can be stumbled upon in the small area of Liberty, just north of Ellensburg.
8. Dyer, WA
This flimsy build was abandoned long ago in the middle of nowhere in Central Washington!
9. Former Western State Hospital building - Lakewood, WA
You'll find the old remains of this peculiar psychiatric clinic in Fort Steilacoom County Park, although there have been rumors of demolishing the building entirely.
10. Port Discovery, WA
This deteriorated old mill can be discovered on the Olympic Peninsula in Port Discovery, or what is now referred to as Discovery Bay.
We think it would be fun to spend a weekend visiting several of these sites and make a road trip out of it.
