When I think of winter, I think of gloomy, chilly days. This time of year is hard for me as I anxiously wait for those beautiful spring days. Fortunately, there is one March event in Washington State that adds plenty of color to this dreary month.

Enter: Winthrop Annual Air Balloon Roundup. During this highly-anticipated event, you’ll watch colorful balloons brighten up the Methow Valley's skies. Plus, there are activities to keep you busy, from pancake breakfasts to wine tasting and nighttime glows. It’s a great way to welcome in spring.

Mark your calendars for March 6 to March 8, 2026 to attend the Air Balloon Roundup in Winthrop, Washington. This hot air balloon event has delighted residents and tourists alike for 29 years, and there’s no better setting to enjoy it. Winthrop is a small mountain town with approximately 600 residents. It is best known for its incredible Old West-style buildings and its long list of outdoor activities.

But there’s really nothing like watching hot air balloons soar over this beautiful small town. Multiple balloons will launch each morning of this three-day event, filling the sky (weather permitting, of course). Launch typically occurs around 7 a.m., and the balloons stay in the air for several hours.

It's worth waking up early to watch the hot air balloons, and individuals are even welcome to visit the launch site. The launch site area is free to visit, but you must reserve your spot. Plus, you can experience a once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon ride during this annual roundup. Keep in mind, however, that no pets or smoking are allowed.

On Saturday, March 7, 2026, you’ll find activities for the entire family to enjoy. Start your morning by watching the balloons fly high above you while devouring a delicious pancake breakfast. This popular breakfast is a fundraiser for various programs in the community, resources, and scholarships. That evening, head downtown to enjoy wine tasting and shopping specials.

One of the community’s favorite events during this weekend is the Balloon Night Glow, where several hot balloons inflate but do not take off along Riverside Avenue. The light of the fire and the colors of the balloons create a mesmerizing sight that children and adults will love.
