Open Since 1950 and Now Nonprofit: Hull’s Drive-In in Virginia Shows 2 Movies for 1 Ticket
This classic Virginia drive-in offers old-school movie magic.
Going to the movie theater is the ultimate rainy-day activity, but a drive-in movie theater is one of those classic summer experiences that harkens back to a simpler time. Drive-in theaters are rare these days, but there's one in Virginia that's been in business since 1950: Hull's Drive-In. What began as a family business is now a community-owned theater in Lexington, Virginia, playing a delightful assortment of films under the stars for all ages and interests. If you've yet to make the trip to Hull's, you're in for an unforgettable experience.
For nearly 75 years, Hull's Drive-In has been a staple in the Rockbridge County community. The theater was originally built by W.C. Atkins and operated as Lee's Drive-In. In 1957, the business was purchased by Sebert W. Hull, who operated the theater for decades. Mr. Hull passed away in 1998, and his wife sold the company to W.D. Goad, who was able to keep the theater up and running. However, some costly repairs were needed, and the theater was forced to close for the 1999 season.
Dozens of local citizens banded together in an effort to preserve the business, and they formed a group known as Hull's Angels. In just three months, the group had expanded to include 500 members, and they raised $10,000. By December of 2000, Hull's Drive-In officially became the first non-profit drive-in theater in the nation, and thanks to dedicated workers, volunteers, and loyal members, it's been a success story ever since.
The theater operates between spring and fall, with movie times beginning about 20-30 minutes after sunset each evening. In the spring and fall, the gates open at 5:30 p.m., and in the summer, they open at 8:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The price for adult admission is $12 and just $6 for ages 5-11. You can also purchase an entire season movie pass for $250, which covers the price for up to seven people.
When you arrive, be sure to have an FM radio with you—or use your car radio. You may also rent one from the concession stand if needed. And speaking of concessions, there are lots of great options to choose from. You can't go wrong with the classic popcorn, soda, and candy option, but there's more; grilled cheese on Texas toast, a double cheeseburger, or funnel cake fries are just a few of the heartier options you can look forward to trying.
One of the best parts of this drive-in theater is that each admission ticket includes the second presentation, which is a second movie that plays after the feature presentation. It's a two-for-one deal that movie-goers will be thrilled about! Curious to see what's playing at Hull's? Check out their upcoming schedule and plan your visit!
