Explore This Natural Maze In Virginia For An Unforgettable Adventure

There's no place like Virginia for a good ol' adventure. Whether you're looking for the traditional hike through the woods or something else altogether, Virginia has an impressive array of options for all kinds of outdoor excursions. Located in southwest Virginia is one such place that is equally scenic and unusual. The Channels Natural Area Preserve has a natural maze that will lead explorers through some incredible geological formations. Here's more information about the Great Channels and how to make the most of them.

Located just outside of Lebanon, hikers will find one of the most unusual geological features in the state. These Great Channels are made from large sandstone boulders and crevices that have eroded over the years. This phenomenon has created a natural maze which can be navigated along the Great Channels Trail.

The Channels Natural Area Preserve was established in 2008 in hopes of protecting these formations as well as the surrounding area. This preserves not only the sandstone but also the beautiful land that encompasses Channels State Forest.

Geologists believe that these Channels were formed nearly 400 million years ago, when the sandstone was influenced by the harsh ice and permafrost of the last ice age. This pressure created cracks in the sandstone, eventually leaving the formation that’s visible today.

So what’s the best way to experience the Great Channels? Hiking through this colorful maze, of course. The trail is rated medium in difficulty and lasts for 6.2 miles, roundtrip. The trek begins on Raven Ridge Road, a dirt road with signs indicating the Channels. Be on the lookout for the white diamond blazes that signify the trail.

Along the way, you’ll notice a few private cabins on the road and mile makers to keep track of the distance. After approximately 3 miles, the trail splits off to the Brumley Mountain Trail and you’ll want to keep left to continue past a series of mini-channels.

At approximately 3.25 miles, you’ll notice the fire tower which signifies that the Channels are near. After passing by the tower, continue along the path and follow the arrows that lead to the channels.

Once you’ve arrived at the Channels themselves, spend time navigating these incredible sandstone structures. Intricate, maze-like structures create crevices and pockets where you can see the unique coloration up close. The terrain around this portion of the hike seems like something from a prehistoric world, as huge rocks create walls around you and the growing plants.

While these mazes are certainly spectacular, there’s also nothing like the views of the surrounding landscape to remind you just how beautiful Virginia adventures can be.
