Walk Across A 300-Foot Suspension Bridge Over The Clinch River In Virginia
The Clinchport Suspension Bridge in southwestern Virginia offers an adventurous and adrenaline-inducing experience due to its historic architecture and lack of sturdy hand railings.
There's something so alluring about swinging bridges. Perhaps it's the historic architecture of these bridges that have existed in Virginia for centuries that makes us nostalgic for the past. Or maybe it's the sense of adventure from crossing a safe but not-so-sturdy structure that gives us a rush of adrenaline. No matter the reason, we're fortunate to have several swinging bridges just ready to be crossed. Today, we'll introduce you to a lesser-known destination known as the Clinchport Suspension Bridge, also known as the Clinchport Swinging Bridge. Measuring nearly 300 feet in length, this bridge promises quite an adventure.
Today's feature destination takes us to the beautiful region of southwestern Virginia, where we'll follow U.S. Route 23 to the Clinchport Suspension Bridge.
As you may have guessed from its name, the bridge spans the width of the Clinch River, spanning an impressive 225 feet across.
Perhaps what makes this bridge so adrenaline-inducing is the fact that there isn't much in the way of hand railings or side guards.
As you can see by the photo below, taken in 2020, even the flimsy rope is beginning to deteriorate.
With every step you take, you'll feel the bridge wobble or sway. It's a bit unnerving!
If you're afraid of heights or unsure about swinging bridges, this may not be the adventure for you.
Instead, make the quick trip to Natural Tunnel State Park!
When it comes to unique bridge crossings in Virginia, this one may just take the cake.
