The Best Apple Cider Donuts In Virginia Come From This Remote Farm
Great Country Farms in Bluemont makes some of the best apple cider donuts in Virginia.
We're not sure exactly when it happened, but apple cider donuts have become synonymous with the arrival of fall in Virginia. Perhaps even greater than our need to order a seasonal latte is our desire to scout out a local farm and sample one of autumn's greatest culinary delights. Luckily, apple cider donuts aren't hard to come by in the Old Dominion. We've got many reliable local farms, orchards, and farmers' markets. But once you try the donuts from Great County Farms in Bluemont, Virginia, you'll have trouble settling for anything else.
At the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Loudoun County, you'll find a 400-acre working farm that's been in business since 1993. The Zurschmeide Family has farmed the land for generations, and before opening its commercial farm, delivered produce to homes in northern Virginia through a Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA).

Great Country Farms has grown since its early days, earning it a place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. The farmers rely on creativity and innovation to farm in a notoriously challenging climate and have been rewarded with a bounty of top-notch produce. As stewards of the land, they are firm believers in regenerative agriculture.

One reason we love Great Country Farms is the community feel. Visitors are invited to pick their own produce, whether that means strawberries in the early summer or apples in September. Apple picking is especially memorable; you and your crew will ride a wagon out to the orchard and pick fruits from dwarf trees that don't require a ladder. Plus, the farm has its own unique apple varieties, including Candy Crisp®, Jonafree, Jonagold, Ruby John, and Shizuka.
No time for apple picking? Head on over to the Farm Market & Bakery, which is open daily from 9:00 a.m. til 5:00 p.m., and feast your eyes on local honey, hand-gathered eggs, and, of course, freshly baked donuts.

These donuts are notorious in Northern Virginia and have gained a reputation for being some of the best. They sell out quickly, so if you can get your hands on a dozen, you should. Hot and freshly made, they're nothing short of delightful.
If you do have more time to spend on the farm, your kids will love all of the family-friendly attractions, including giant mazes, a splash pad, putt-putt, and more.
There are so many reasons to head to Bluemont and experience this lovely local farm as well as its other businesses, including Bluemont Vineyard and Dirt Farm Brewing. You might even consider getting a Fan of the Farm Season Pass, which grants you and your immediate household unlimited farm visits, wagon rides, and discounts on produce, beverages, and more.
