The Vermont Country Store was founded by Vrest and Mildred Ellen Orton in 1946 as the first restored rural country store in the nation in Weston, Vermont.

Their origins lie in the Orton family’s long Vermont history.

In 1897, Gardner Lyman Orton, the 8th generation of Ortons in the United States, opened a general store with his father-in-law Melvin Teachout in Calais, Vermont. Gardner's wife Leila gave birth to their eldest son Vrest that same year. Pictured is the interior of the store in 1946.

The Vermont Country Store is still operated by the Orton family today.

The Vermont Country Store in Weston store has the distinction of being America’s first restored and fully operational country store and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Along with locals and passerby's, this is a popular stop for bus tours.

In fact, the tours can spend several hours looking at all the products and displays.
