The Green Mountain Cemetery Is One Of Vermont’s Spookiest Cemeteries

Green Mountain Cemetery in Vermont has a reputation for being one of the spookiest spots in the state. And it’s no wonder.

This quiet spot was first established as a burial ground in 1854. It spans about 35 acres in Montpelier and is home to hundreds of graves.

For years, visitors have been reported haunted happenings amidst the tombstones at Green Mountain Cemetery. People have alleged seeing strange glowing orbs, hearing odd sounds, and sensing footsteps in the dark behind them.

One of the cemetery’s most famous long-term residents is John E. Hubbard. He was a successful Vermont business man who contested the will of his wealthy aunt after she died.

His aunt intended for her fortune to be given to the city of Montpelier and used to build a public library. Hubbard objected to this and wound up winning his case and the fortune.

When Hubbard died, he was buried at Green Mountain Cemetery under a particularly eerie-lookin bronze statue. The statue is called "Thanatos," meaning "death" in Greek. However, locals call it Black Agnes. Legend has it that if you sit on the statue’s lap, you’ll be cursed.
