Stand Along The Former Border Of Texas At This Fascinating Historic Landmark

The Republic of Texas Boundary Marker is a unique historic landmark that marks the former international boundary between Texas and the United States.

The state of Texas is nothing less of an institution in the United States, but few people realize that Texas was once its own country. For a brief decade in the 19th century, the Lone Star State had its own currency, flags, and boundaries to indicate where Texas ended and the United States began. The Republic of Texas used granite markers to indicate borders, and there is exactly one that remains standing today. Read on to learn more about this historic landmark in Texas.

The Republic of Texas Boundary Marker can be found just southeast of the small town of Deadwood.

You probably wouldn't expect to find one of the most historic places in Texas in this small town!

Dating back to 1840, the marker indicates an international boundary between what was then the Republic of Texas and the United States.

Today the marker is situated along the Louisiana/Texas state line along Texas Farm-to-Market Road 31.

Between 1836 - 1846, Texans had a unique currency, capital, flag, and embassy.

Its unique history allows it to be the only international marker completely within the continental U.S.

Though there were many granite markers during this time, this particular landmark is the only one that has stood the test of time.

The granite pillar measures nine inches square and stands four feet tall, but actually continues underground for another six feet to ensure it stays put.

The marker is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
