The Country’s Most Impressive Rest Stop Is Hiding Right Here In Texas
Rest stops are hardly ever newsworthy, but this one is a definite exception. Hiding way out west near Big Bend Ranch State Park, the most impressive rest stop in Texas features picnic tables underneath giant teepees. Enjoy some shade, breathtaking views of the Rio Grande, and lots of peace and quiet before getting back on the road.
Next time you find yourself driving along FM170 out near Terlingua and Lajitas, keep an eye out for what is perhaps the most charming rest stop in all of Texas.
Tucked away on the side of this lonely road in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, these teepees house picnic tables for travelers to take a break from their journeys and enjoy a short respite.
The rest area overlooks the beautiful Rio Grande, and just across from it lies Mexico.
Hardly anyone is ever here, so you can rest assured you'll have plenty of quiet time to soak up the views.
Speaking of views, the scenery from the actual teepees is pretty great, too.
Personally, I never get tired of seeing those towering West Texas canyons.
As far as amenities, each teepee has a picnic table, BBQ pit, and trashcan. There are no restrooms or running water.
Roadside grilling? Only in Texas!
The history of the teepees is quite interesting. They were installed in the 1960s by the Texas Department of Transportation as part of an effort to infuse rest stops with regional heritage.
If you happen to see a classic car, prepare to feel like you've been transported into an old movie.
And if you're lucky, you just might see our state flower growing on the side of the road!
