Old Baylor Park in Independence, Texas, showcases the ruins of Baylor University's original campus and offers a glimpse into the state's early history.

I think it's safe to say that almost everyone in America has heard of Baylor University. Far fewer people know, however, that the nationally-ranked college is one of the oldest continually operating higher education facilities in the U.S. It was established in 1845 by last Congress of the Republic of Texas, and you can still visit the ruins of the original campus at Old Baylor Park in the village of Independence (near Brenham).

Located in the unincorporated village of Independence near Brenham, Old Baylor Park tells the fascinating origin story of one of Texas' most prestigious universities.

Independence was once home to many early leaders of the Republic of Texas, and Baylor University spent 41 years there before moving to its current location in Waco following the Civil War and railroad changes in Texas.

The university opened as a coeducational facility, but separate colleges for men and women were established soon after.

Women lived and studied at Academy Hill, while the men's college was erected across Independence Creek at Windmill Hill (next to the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham).

In addition to the campus ruins, the park also features a number of log cabins and other historic buildings from the era, plus interpretive signs for context.

While Old Baylor Park is open year-round, it is especially worth visiting in the spring, when wildflower fields extend as far as the eye can see across the

The park also features several stately live oaks whose branches snake all throughout the landscape. You will definitely want to bring a good camera!
