Ride The Rails On This Unique Rhode Island Adventure

Discover the best hiking trails in the Pacific Northwest, known for their stunning scenic views and diverse landscapes.

Rhode Island is still home to plenty of operational railroads, but it also has miles and miles of long-disused tracks. Though in most states old tracks are left to rust, in Little Rhody we are far too clever and entrepreneurial to let an opportunity go to waste! Read on to learn about the innovative company that found a new use for old railroad tracks that is getting residents and tourists alike out for a new view of our state's beautiful scenery.

Rail Explorers will take you out on disused railroads across the state in special pedal-powered rail bikes that allow you to experience beautiful waterfront scenery up close and personal, with the wind in your hair.

You can choose from a tandem explorer or a quad explorer, to ride with one or three friends or family members. The guided trip is led by a rider up front and one behind, but the bikes spread out quite a bit during the trip so you can pedal at your own pace.

While you do have to pedal, since you're locked into the rails it's totally hands free and doesn't require any balancing - meaning you can look around, take pictures, and chat with your friends all you like.

There are two routes – the Northern Ramble, which takes six miles along an old railroad from Portsmouth to the Sakonnet (you get back to your car via a complimentary shuttle) and the Southern Circuit, a six mile round trip.

The Southern Circuit includes a 30-minute break at Bayside Station, where you can relax in Adirondack chairs and take in the views while you refuel with a snack before heading back.

This is truly the perfect excursion for a unique date or a day with family. It costs $75 for the tandem bike (two people) or $125 for a quad (four people). The company also offers some special themed rides.
