You may not know that Portland is home to the largest wetland park in the United States. This lovely getaway in the city is just waiting for you to explore, and with over 2000-acres, two lakes, and a vast array of water birds, this is the perfect spot for a late summer or fall trip.
Smith and Bybee Lakes are nestled in Portland's North side, surrounded by warehouses and port terminals.
Because it is off-the-beaten path, it is one of the area's best kept secrets for nature exploration.
Consisting of two lakes - Smith and Bybee - this is prime spotting grounds for beavers, deer, otters, osprey, bald eagles, and turtles.
Smith Lake's water levels are maintained, making it a perfect spot for canoeing and kayaking.
While Bybee Lake's water levels rise and fall with the tides and seasonally, making it the best place to spot water birds and wildlife.
The 2.1 mile hike is flat and perfect for families and people of varying physical ability.
Directly before the park entrance, look for the paved path named the Interlakes Trail, and disappear into a forest of cottonwoods and snowberries for a lovely shaded hike.
At a junction, continue to the left towards Smith Lake, stopping to take in views of the Columbia Slough and the beaver activity all around.
You will pass a lovely gazebo that is perfect for watching the water birds, and can continue on to Bybee Lake before heading back.
This lovely out-and-back trail is everything you need for a beautiful day in the city. But because of the wildlife at the park, dogs are not allowed, so leave your furry friends at home.
Smith and Bybee Wetland Natural Area is open daily from dawn until dusk. The park is located at 5300 N Marine Drive.
