We're in the homestretch! Before you know it, we'll be saying farewell to 2017. PA is one of the best places to celebrate the dawning of a new year. In fact, these eight towns make the celebration even more memorable. Here are eight off-the-wall things that drop on New Year's Eve in Pennsylvania.
1. Mushroom – Kennett Square
Ring in the New Year in Kennett Square, the Mushroom Capital of the World. Of course, at the stroke of midnight, a giant mushroom will drop from the sky. Kids, who might not stay up til midnight, can watch as the mushroom is raised into the air at 8:45 p.m. Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Kennett Square, starting at 6 p.m. on December 31, 2017.
2. Wrench – Mechanicsburg
The community of Mechanicsburg has come together every New Year’s Eve since 2003 to watch the dropping of the wrench. The tradition is an ode to "mechanics who settled in the area to make and repair wagons that were traveling west after crossing the Susquehanna River in the early 19th century." The 2017 celebration kicks off on New Year’s Eve at 9 p.m.
3. Pickle – Dillsburg
Love pickles? Drink pickle juice? Then, you’ve got a date with the pickle drop in Dillsburg on New Year’s Eve 2017. When the clock strikes midnight, a six foot tall pickle will drop from the top of a firetruck ladder into – what else? – a pickle barrel. New Year’s Eve festivities kick off at 4:30 p.m.
4. Hershey’s Kiss – Hershey
What else would you expect a town known for its famous chocolate to drop on New Year’s Eve? A Hershey's Kiss it is. Celebrate the start of a New Year, starting at 9 p.m. on December 31, 2017 in Hershey.
5. Marshmallow Peep – Bethlehem
Gotta love those Peeps, right? What better way to usher in a new year than by counting down to the Marshmallow Peep drop in Bethlehem? The annual two-day Peepfest, held on December 30-31, 2017, features a jam-packed schedule of activities, culminating in the traditional peep drop at the stroke of 5:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
6. Bologna – Lebanon
Toast your love of bologna – and ring in the New Year – at the annual bologna drop in Lebanon. The block of the favorite lunch meat drops precisely at midnight with the celebration beginning at 10 p.m. on December 31, 2017.
7. Button – Carlisle
Watch a magnificent 50 pound button drop on New Year’s Eve 2017 in Carlisle. Party the evening away, starting at 6 p.m., followed by the button drop and accompanying fireworks.
8. White Rose – York
Cheer as a glorious white rose drops at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2018 in York. The white rose signifies the War of the Roses (York versus Lancaster). The evening’s festivities begin at 6 p.m.
